I
Un guerrier per alegrar
vuelh comensar car m'agensa,
que non lo dey plus celar,
trop l'auray tengut en pensa;
e guereiaray d'amor,
en domens de ma guerieira
a trobat guereiador
que guereia volontieira.

II
Guerier, ben vuelh guereiar
ab vos d'amor ses failhensa,
car - sapchas - non puesc trobar
hom de milhor entendensa
ni sia plus fin aimador
ni mielh sapcha la karieira
de ben amar per amor
ni tengua sa laus entieira.

III
Guerieira, sobrelauzar
mi voles per benvolensa;
ben vos vuelh dir ses duptar
- e iur vos per ma crezensa -
que vos est de beutat flor,
que non say, hon ieu mi quieira,
en Tharascon bellazor
que miels del dart d'amor fieira.

IV
Mon guerier, cortes d'amar,
sapchas que gran penedensa
sufri car no·us aus mostrar
l'amistat gran de valensa
qu'ieu vos port, car gran secor
mi fora si la manieira
no fos del lauzengador
maldizen qu'es trop sobrieira.

V
Ma guerieira, am pres clar,
plena de gran conoissensa,
no vulhas per so laisar
qu'ieu suy en vostra plevensa;
car qui am'a sa honor
leialmens ni vertadieira
non deu pas aver temor
de persona lauzengieira.

VI
Guerier, per vostra valor
vos seray lial guerrieira,
car vos portas per lauzor
de savia la bannieira.

    I
    Because I am joyful, I wish to begin a song
    for I am pleased
    that I am no longer obliged to hide it,
    and I have kept it in my thoughts too long:
    and I will sing of love
    the day after my opponent
    has prepared the field of battle
    and enters the fray willingly.

    II
    Warrior, indeed I wish to wage a war
    of words with you about love, there's no doubt.
    For you may know that I cannot find
    a man of better understanding
    nor a more courtly lover
    who may teach the opponent
    how to love well through love
    and possess its glory completely.

    III
    Warrior woman, you wish to praise me
    overly because of your benevolence;
    I want to tell you truly
    - and I swear to you by all I believe in -
    that you have the beauty of a flower.
    And I do not know, wherever I turn,
    a more beautiful lady in Tarascon
    who can wound so well with the dart of love,

    IV
    My warrior, ennobled by love -,
    you know that I suffered great pain,
    because I dared not reveal to you
    the truly virtuous friendship
    that I feel towards you; and it would
    assist me greatly if the custom
    was not to gossip slanderously,
    as it is too powerful.

    V
    My warrior woman, I love you purely,
    you are full of great wisdom
    you should not give up because of that,
    for I am in your confidence;
    and whoever loves his honor
    loyally and honestly,
    need have no fear
    of people who gossip.

    VI
    My warrior, because of your worth
    I will be your loyal warrior woman,
    for your wisdom makes you worthy
    of bearing away the banner.
