Sachiez, dame, c’auteir mestier ait cil
De Deu servir ki vient novellemant
Com uns anneis, car tout prant a son chois
Amors ausi an son chois chascun prant:
L’un prant anuit et l’autre au dariens,
Et cant aucuns s’est en amors enpoint;
Cil ke trait ne se puet ancuseir,
Mais cil ki sert jusc’a la fin est beirs.

    Tell me, lady, who has better discharged his debt

    Love likewise takes each of us as she chooses,
    Taking one today and another later,
    Whenever a person is ripe for love;
    The one who defers cannot be blamed,
    And he who serves love forever after is the worthy one.

    — Dear sweet lord, you are not shrewd
    If you think it is thus,
    That one cannot be too tardy in love,
    Provided that one perseveres until death.
    You know full well that back pain sets in,
    Which keeps old men from laboring as long;
    Beyond the age of forty one only declines:
    One is then hardly suited to partake in pleasure.


    V
    Lady, a slow, late worker is preferable
    To one much superior who repents of having labored.
    Love is born in the heart: that is its proper seat;
    It does not come from the loins to any extent,
    For a cow gets more from an old bull
    Than from a young calf that gets worked up for naught.
    It is child’s play to start and not finish:
    A good finish brings praise to the whole work.
