    I
    Good Lady, on the point I’m consulting you about
    tell me the truth as you see it:
    if your true lover loves you so much
    that he neither courts nor flatters anyone but you,
    then tell me, according to your thinking,
    if you’ll love him or allow him to suffer,
    for I’m the one who can convey your answer to him.

    II
    And tell me, Bertran, by the truth you owe me,
    who is this friend, I want to know that first,
    for I’m afraid (this is why I grow more hesitant)
    that you may be a deceptive messenger;
    you’ll have trouble finding out what I intend;
    I don’t want to reveal my wishes so readily
    for I couldn’t save myself without lying.

    III
    Lady, if I were the man you take me for,
    inquiring of you, it is I who would be deceived,

    who is, for love, your utter servant
    and loves you so much that he fears no mistreatment
    from your love; and you, lady, if it pleases you,
    kindly brighten his sad heart with joy.

    IV
    For love of you, Bertran, because you ask me
    I will love him, but he’ll be little loved;
    I’ll not promise him nor grant him hope
    that I’ll give my love, because he’s hidden himself from me;
    and I don’t think he really feels love’s power,
    for if he loved and if desire compelled him
    he would give some sign that he was a lover.

    V
    Lady, I am that lover of yours,
    perfect and faithful, true and just and loyal;
    and I will be so humbly your servant
    that to endure pain will be no burden.
    And you, lady, as gracious as you are,
    accept my service, for it’s much to your advantage
    as long as I never stray from you in any way.

    VI
    Friend Bertran, this is a game we share
    for I love the one who is my heartfelt lover,
    and do you know how I want that friend to be?
    Perfect and faithful, truthful and undeceiving,
    not too talkative, or indiscreet, or boastful,
    but very worthy at least as far as he can be,
    because it’s fitting at his home or away from it.

    VII
    Lady, I am he who thinks of no one else,
    nor can my heart be drawn to any other.

    VIII
    Friend Bertran, a lover must act nobly
    if he is honest, faithful, and no deceiver.
